Team Coaching is not a new phenomenon. It’s been around for ages. From tribal teams to sport teams to organizational teams. Even a family unit could be viewed as a team.

As the post-Covid reality hit the economy, team coaching blossomed even more. For a company, it’s much more cost-effective to hire a coach for an entire team versus an individual employee. And, with the world becoming Zoom-friendly (and other software like Google Meet, etc.), Team Coaching became more accessible and affordable than ever.

1. Why Team Coaching is a Strategic Move for Coaches

If you are a coach and want to grow your coaching business, you may need to adjust your thinking to this new reality.

Not so long ago, a way to get into a new organization was to offer your services for individual coaching. Then in time, once they got to know you and appreciated the value of your coaching, they may have invited you to coach their teams.

Nowadays, a smarter move may be to offer Team Coaching services from the start. Your proposal will have a better chance of getting noticed since an organization would see the potential of getting a bigger bang for their buck. And then you can offer individual sessions as an additional service.

2. The Significance of ICF’s Advanced Certification in Team Coaching (ACTC)

Team Coaching has become so popular that the International Coaching Federation (ICF) created a special credential: Advanced Certification in Team Coaching (ACTC). The requirements for the applicant are: the completion of at least 60 hours of training in Team Coaching Core Competencies, 5 supervision sessions, and 5 team coaching engagements. Wait, what? Team Coaching Core Competencies? Yes, about a year ago, on the basis of ICF Core Competencies that were created for individual coaching, ICF developed Team Coaching Core Competencies.

I waited to see if this was just a fad. A year passed, and Team Coaching has only grown more and more popular. Not only that, more and more people and organizations know about this ACTC credential from ICF. Well, ICF was always good at marketing, and after all, they are considered to be the gold standard for credentialing in the coaching industry.

As the Founder/Executive Director of a leading international coach training school, I decided it was time to create a stellar Team Coaching course. I talked about it with my partner and VP, Allexis Tuccio, MCC, who had a tremendous amount of experience in Team Coaching. I knew that together we could offer something amazing. And we did. Our Team Coaching course was quickly approved and accredited by ICF – and we soon taught our first course.

3. Seize the Opportunity: Get Your ACTC Credential Now

Then it was time to not only teach Team Coaching at our school but to obtain my own ACTC credential. That meant taking the CKA exam like everyone else. A lesson in humility. The exam was tough but fair, and it felt really good to add that certificate to all my other ICF credentials.

As you’re reading this, you’re probably wondering whether or not obtaining the ACTC credential is really so important. You might not have even heard about it yet. However, there’s no doubt you will.

When ICF was founded back in 1995, many coaches weren’t sure that the coaching profession was going to establish itself. The general public didn’t know what coaching was – and it took a few years before ICF certification really started establishing itself in the market.

ICF really fueled the growth of the coaching industry by self-regulating it with credentialing levels. According to the latest data from the International Coaching Federation’s 2024 Global Coaching Studies, it has now grown to over six billion dollars annually.

Now, most organizations won’t even consider engaging the coaching services of someone who doesn’t have ICF credentials. And many organizations send their employees to study coaching in an effort to implement an in-house coaching culture.

They say that history repeats itself. As more coaches obtain their ACTC credentials, more organizations are going to become aware that they could hire a Team Coach who has been vetted by ICF. Seeing an ACTC credential from the most respected organization regulating the coaching industry will make them feel more confident in their hiring decisions. Soon enough, to be hired for a Team Coaching assignment, you will be required to have ACTC credentials.

There is something else to consider. Back in 2003, the requirements for ICF individual credentials were very different from today. Coaches were only required to submit their experience hours and training hours. I could have applied for my MCC credential without taking any tests. Unfortunately, I waited too long – because I didn’t think that anything was going to change. Then suddenly it did.

When I finally applied, I had to take an oral test. There were two ICF Assessors on the phone with me, and I had to coach one of them while the other one listened. There were no written tests. Since then, the process has become very different. Coaches must submit recordings of their coaching sessions to ICF to be evaluated. Coaches don’t know who their assessors are. There are PCC Markers and other instruments that help assessors in defining your skill level. In addition, there is now a challenging written test that many coaches fail the first time.

What’s my point? Don’t put it off! Get your ACTC credentials now while the requirements are relatively easy. You don’t need a crystal ball to predict that it will become increasingly more challenging in the future.

This is your moment. Take advantage of the currently relaxed requirements! Gain a competitive advantage over other coaches who are going to sit and wait!

The only thing that remains for discussion is what team coach training to choose. There are so many different models in Team Coaching, it can be confusing and even a bit overwhelming.

When Allexis and I were creating our Team Coaching course, we thought long and hard about what model or models of Team Coaching to focus on. We compiled many of the most popular ones and created a learning portal with lots of templates, useful links, and best practices. It serves as a homework platform that frees up a lot of class time for hands-on Team Coaching work and supervision.

Despite the fact that we explore many different approaches, we teach conceptually and holistically. We find the common denominator that could best be applied to any specific Team Coaching scenario. For instance, no matter what model you follow, all coaches are in agreement that creating trust within the team members is crucially important.

We look at best practices and teach how to apply them in even the most challenging Team Coaching situations. What would you do when one team member is not happy with another team member or with the coach? What would you do when the team manager is defensive and not helpful to his own team? What would you do when a team member underperforms while others work twice as hard? How would you help the team members clarify their respective roles and responsibilities? We address practical situations like these and bring them to class in realistic simulation exercises.

Both Allexis and I have backgrounds in acting, and we enjoy acting out these Team Coaching scenarios. The class is fun, and it’s easier to learn and remember when you’re having a good time.

Otherwise, there will be stress, frustration, and even rebellion—as you will try (consciously or not) to turn coaching into something that it is not (i.e., consulting, mentoring, teaching, advising, etc.) So, if any of your answers were “Neutral”, “Disagree” or “Strongly Disagree”, answering these coaching questions honestly may prove to be useful:

• What made you mark your responses the way you did?
• How important are those views for you?
• How ready are you to replace them with an opposite point of view?

Just as any profession, coaching is not for everyone. What really distinguishes coaching from other helping professions is that we view our clients as being “whole, creative, and resourceful”. We hold them in “unconditional positive regard”. These phrases are taken directly from the International Coaching Federation’s definitions of coaching and their core competencies that define coaching behavior and mindset.

Considering that perspective, a coach is curious about their client’s points of view, behavior, beliefs, values and strengths versus being curious about any situational information. Since the client already has all the situational information, asking about that would serve the coach, not the client. However, for another helping professional it may be required to gather all the information in order to figure out the best way forward for the client. Alternatively, the coach’s questions and reflections would be helping the client determine their own way forward.

There is no reliance on the coach to provide the answers. There is no pushing or pulling from the coach. There is no agenda from the coach. Instead, there is an invitation for the client to decide what they would like to discover, talk about, and achieve at every coaching session. The client is always in charge of the direction of the coaching conversation and decides if it’s serving them well in the moment.

In other helping professions, the professional decides on the way forward during the sessions. They decide on a specific approach and how each session should be evolving. In coaching, it is done in full partnership, with the client having the leading voice. That alone brings about lots of different techniques and approaches that are unique to coaching.

The attitude of regarding the client as “whole, creative and resourceful” is of utmost importance.  A desire to “rescue” changes that attitude completely. You simply can’t be in full partnership with someone you feel any responsibility for rescuing them. It doesn’t necessarily mean that this person can’t be coached. However, it does mean that they can’t be your client.

Another aspect is the consideration of starting your own business. Most people are just not comfortable with the unpredictability in terms of income that comes with having your own business. However, there is no need to quit your day job prematurely.  “All or nothing” thinking creates stress and isn’t helpful. You can cultivate your coaching business and allow it to blossom to the point when the decision to focus on it 100% becomes evident and organic.

There may also be an emotional challenge of charging money for “just talking” to people. It may take some self-convincing that what you do is valuable and that you offer something unique and real. Completing a professional Level 1 or Level 2 training at an ICF-accredited school and gaining experience may help in elevating your self-confidence and belief in yourself as a coach.

Choosing your calling is a very important decision. Congratulations! You decided to become a coach. At this point, you start hectically gathering all kinds of information and getting really overwhelmed. How much should a good coach training cost? Do I have to decide on my coaching niche before enrolling in a coach training? Is it ok that I don’t have an education in psychology? Which school to go to?

Cool your heels, breathe… and let’s look at some common myth-conceptions when thinking of becoming a coach.

Myth #1. Coaching is a shortcut to success and freedom

You may be saying to yourself, “Very quickly, I’ll be able to quit my day job. Financial independence, here I come!”

You may have an idealized vision of yourself on a beach sipping lemonade (or something more exotic) and making lots of money talking to clients. It’s not your fault. You’ve probably been fed these stories romanticizing coaching profession. It is, in fact, a wonderful and very rewarding profession but any successful coach will tell you that it didn’t happen overnight. It takes months and most likely about 2-3 years.

The thing is… it’s not much different from starting any other business. That means investing lots of time and energy into building it, getting your networks involved, creating new connections, starting (or continuing) with social media, etc., etc., etc. Yes, it will take work and you must be realistic about it. The difference from other helping professions is that you really can build a successful coaching business on a shoestring budget. Simply because you don’t need to have an office space. Unless you want to. The only real financial investment will be your coaching education.

On that note, beware of coaching schools that promise you a line at your door of eager coaching clients as soon as you finish their training. Wake up! It would be nice if it would be true but in your heart of hearts you know it’s a scam. Run!

Coaching schools are not job placement agencies. Even an agency wouldn’t promise you a job placement but they’ll try — because it’s their business. Coaching schools are in the business of teaching and selling their courses. Guess, what’s going to happen when you complete a training at a school that got you in with false promises? That’s right, they’ll probably try to sell you more courses with more pie-in-the-sky promises — versus getting you coaching clients.

Myth #2. Coaching is easy and will take very little effort to learn

The truth is, learning to coach effectively is almost as challenging as learning another language. Even though you don’t have to learn new words for coaching, there is a completely new way of listening, providing feedback, and asking questions.

For instance, if I were to introduce myself in Italian, the literal translation would be, “Hi, I call myself Marianna”. Sounds weird in English, right? Yet, it makes perfect sense in Italian. Similarly, in coaching we have a certain phraseology and structures that may feel “weird” at first. Yet, in order to become a coach, we must become fluent in “coaching language”. It just takes patience and practice.

Prepare yourself for making lots of mistakes as you learn the coaching craft. Yes, you are absolutely guaranteed to make lots of mistakes — regardless of your prior academic and professional achievements. You may have your PhD or Master’s degree, feel proud of your accomplishments — and you might have forgotten that learning any practical skill is accompanied by making mistakes. It’s natural and expected. In fact, it’s how you learn!

And yet, it may be hard for you to imagine that you will stumble, and stumble again. Imagine learning a new dance and awkwardly stepping on your partner’s toes. And yet, when you’ve practiced enough and learned all the moves, what a joy to find yourself dancing smoothly and possibly even with a flair! You get the point. When you dedicate yourself to learning and practicing new skills, eventually they become a natural part of you. This is how you establish a solid foundation on which you begin to develop your own coaching personality, your own coaching voice.

Once you realize that you have to allot the time for studying and practice, you’ll excel quicker and will be able to learn the “coaching dance” much faster. And if you embrace making the mistakes and stop judging yourself, you will also enjoy the learning process. It will actually become fun! And you won’t be alone. You’ll be supported by your teachers and fellow students in class, who are going to be in the same position as you.

Myth #3. I won’t have to do my homework and/or practice coaching. I already know how to do it

Since coaching skills are a form of communication skills, there may be an illusion that learning coaching is not only going to be easy, but that there is nothing new to learn. Since ICF Competencies talk about deep (active) listening, creating rapport (trust and safety), being present, and creating awareness — you may decide that you have been doing that already — officially or not.

That illusion may be intensified if you are coming in from other helping professions that may utilize some coaching skills — such as therapy, social work, teaching, mentoring, etc. People who believe that myth usually take the training in order to be able to display their coaching certificates on their walls, websites, and social media. When they realize that they are required to actually do homework and practice coaching, they wrongly assume they can wing it.

However, when they coach in class, it becomes very obvious that they either didn’t practice their new coaching skills and/or didn’t study. Getting together with peer partners in-between classes without doing homework means that they are still relying on their old approaches rather than practicing their new skills. Their comments and questions in class will usually reflect the level at which they are studying (or rather not studying) the lessons.

One of my students wrote in her feedback, “You can’t hide from Marianna.” It’s true. At our school, in classes with just 6 to 10 (max) students, it’s impossible to hide. You can’t wing it. You have to study, and then practice. I’m going to revert to another dance analogy. You can be a really good hip-hop dancer but it doesn’t mean you can dance in a ballet. Each category of dance is very different and has its own rules and foundations. It is the same with communication skills and coaching.  There is much to learn! You must come to every lesson with an open mind, eager to not only gain new knowledge but to actually gain the skill to put it to use — and make it look easy!

Myth #4. I must have background in psychology

Although coaching utilizes a lot of techniques and approaches from different areas of psychology, you don’t have to have any formal education in psychology prior to enrolling in a coaching course. A good school will provide you with all the knowledge you need to become a good coach. Our course, for instance, offers a variety of approaches based in psychology from the perspective of their application in coaching.

Myth #5. I have to pick a coaching niche before enrolling

If you choose a coach training program that focuses on a specific coaching niche or a coaching philosophy, it better be the one you think of practicing after completing your education. However, picking your coaching niche is certainly NOT a prerequisite.

If you already know your demographic or a specific topic you prefer to coach your future clients on, it’s great. Most people do not. How are you supposed to know your niche if you are just discovering coaching for yourself? In most other industries you must become a generalist before choosing your specialty.

Personally, I think that the very idea of niching in coaching is kind of confusing since coaches don’t provide consultations. The idea of a niche suggests that you are an expert on that topic and therefore should be providing advice on it. (I explore this in greater detail in a book I co-authored about Personal Branding, “Me, My Brand and WHY”).

In fact, ICF applications for credentialing don’t require any information about your niche, and you are being assessed on how skillfully you implement ICF Core Competencies. Period. It’s important to be trained conceptually from the position of ICF Core Competencies, without the need to prematurely pick your niche. So, unless you’re totally committed to a specific niche, a more logical approach would be to enroll in a training that offers all popular coaching niches and approaches. You can always choose your niche or area of specialization later on, if you choose to do so.

Myth #6. The more expensive the training, the better it is

We tend to believe that we get what we pay for. On the other hand, a high-priced training program could simply be an overpriced offer and not the Rolls Royce of training. It could also be a scam. Buyers beware. You must know your budget, as well as looking carefully at what you’re actually getting for your money. It’s important to seek out verifiable recommendations, like on LinkedIn — where you can also find the profiles of teachers and school directors.

Myth #7. I can get my coaching education dirt cheap

While you shouldn’t be mortgaging your house to pay for your coach training, you must realize that a solid, comprehensive coach training program doesn’t come cheap. Sure, there are some programs promoting short-cuts to coaching education. There are also a lot of programs that are not even accredited by ICF. Chances are, when choosing such a training, you will get what you pay for. Your criteria for a coach training should include an ICF-Accreditation Level 1 or Level 2 program that is conducted live with hands-on experience in class under a tutelage of a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) or Master Certified Coach (MCC).

With this criteria in mind, you’re not going to find a legitimate, 6-month course for under $1000 that will allow you to promote yourself as an ICF-certified life coach. The price is going to start at about $3000 for Level 1 at a school that doesn’t have an MCC presence or is too new to have established a trusted reputation in the industry. You probably don’t want that. Next, you’ll see an average price tag for Level 1 in the range of $5000 – $9000. That’s when you must become a savvy buyer and study the differences in school offerings.

Ever since I named our ICF-accredited coach training course “Holistic Life, Career & Executive Coach Training” back in 2005, prospective students have been asking me the same question:
“What do you mean by holistic?” While many people are attracted to the term, they are cautious not to sign up for something too “woo-woo” — like looking into a crystal ball instead of actually studying the discipline of coaching.

In this article, I’m going to address this question with a comprehensive look at the meaning of “holistic,” how it connects to coaching in general, and to our coach training specifically.

What is “holistic”? Taking a peek at Merriam-Webster dictionary online, we see:

ho·lis·tic hō-ˈli-stik

1. of or relating to holism
2. relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts

holistic medicine attempts to treat both the mind and the body
holistic ecology views humans and the environment as a single system

While we are at it, let’s look at “holism” as well:

ho·lism ˈhō-ˌli-zəm

1) a theory that the universe and especially living nature is correctly seen in terms of interacting wholes (as of living organisms) that are more than the mere sum of elementary particles

2) a study or method of treatment that is concerned with wholes or with complete systems : a holistic study or method of treatment

So, how do I define coaching including our course as “holistic”?

1. Coaching the whole person versus the issue

Of course, it’s important to address the issue the client wants to be coached on. However, according to numerous research, we know that if you present the same issue to 10 different people, you’ll have 10 different responses and reactions to it. Our appreciation of any given challenge is informed by who we are: our upbringing and environment, our beliefs, our personality, our strengths and abilities, our knowledge and experience. By holding a mirror to the whole person, we help our clients to see their blind spots and create a deeper level of awareness that goes beyond the issue at hand.

2. ICF core competencies are holistic by their very nature

The holistic nature of ICF Core Competencies becomes even more obvious from the perspective of mastery. In fact, that’s exactly how we teach coaching at Goal Imagery® Coaching Academy: from an MCC (Masterful Certified Coach) perspective.

All 8 competencies are intrinsically connected to each other. The detailed descriptions of each competency reverberate in many others. It’s literally impossible to utilize one without utilizing the others.

For instance, some of the competencies are Creating Trust and Safety, Maintaining Presence, Active Listening, Evolving Awareness. Unless you learn how to create trust and safety, your clients are not going to be able to open up and share. The coaching session will not be productive, and you won’t be able to utilize any other competencies unless this one is addressed. If you are not in a present moment, you won’t be able to demonstrate active listening, and if you don’t listen deeply, how can you ask meaningful questions and offer feedback that may evolve your clients’ awareness?

We believe that it’s not only possible to teach all of the competencies simultaneously, it’s actually necessary for learning the true meaning of each one. Even when explaining each competency separately, we explain each one from the perspective of its ongoing connection to all the others.

3. Holistic approach to coaching class practice

It’s important to practice full coaching sessions in class (which we do extensively) as early as possible in your training. It’s much easier to understand the cohesive connection between the competencies when implementing them within the structure of the full coaching session versus practicing each competency separately in a vacuum. Thus, with an easier understanding, comes an easier and more progressive learning.

4. Holistic inclusivity of all popular coaching niches

ICF Coaching Competencies and the coaching process are applicable to any niche and any coaching topic. ICF certifications are based on the level of coaching skills versus any particular niche. They are as follows: ACC (Associate Certified Coach), PCC (Professional Certified Coach), and MCC (Masterful Certified Coach).

Considering that, we invite students to not only coach but be coached in our classes on any topic of their choice. As a student in one of our classes, you become flexible as a coach, being comfortable to coach anyone on any coaching topic. Also, you don’t have to worry about having to choose a niche before you enroll in the course. And, at the end of the training, if any specific niche calls to you, you can always get more training any time you wish—but this way you’ll know exactly what it is that you like and why you like it.

5. Holistic school certification

Since ICF exclusively provides a skill-based certification, the only way to get your “niched” certification is from your coach training program. Our course is named “Holistic Life, Career, and Executive Coach Training” to holistically (and strategically) include all main niche categories. All other niches belong under one of those three categories: Life, Career, and Executive Coaching.

For instance, health-wellness and spirituality are sub-niches of the Life Coaching niche; interviewing and job search coaching belong to the Career Coaching niche; and leadership coaching is usually under the Executive coaching niche.

There are also sub-niches that can belong to more than one main category. For instance, a relationship niche can be an Executive coaching niche if the relationship being coached on happens at work or it can be in a Life Coaching niche if the coaching is about a relationship with a friend, romantic connection or a family member.

However, if you want a certification in a specific niche—in addition to our “Holistic Life, Career & Executive Coach” certification—we are happy to oblige. Since we train you along all popular niches, additional certifications can be obtained upon request (with an additional exam and a small fee).

6. Comprehensive, “whole” approach to learning

Since we include an organic, natural progression of learning in our class practice, we also include supporting techniques for different niches and coaching philosophies. The course encompasses an enormous amount of knowledge, including brain-based coaching, strength-based coaching, systemic coaching, and behavioral coaching. We include life, executive, leadership, relationship, business, career, health-wellness, academic, spiritual, and other coaching niches.

We also include various scientific approaches that include neuroscience, positive psychology, emotional intelligence, system theories, change theories, adult learning theories, and multiple intelligence’s theories. All of the above doesn’t interfere with our class practice since most of it is offered in a form of a video, audio, and documents you study before your live lesson with a teacher.

7. Holistic approach to each lesson

Our lessons are built on the principles of holism: each lesson includes a few areas of development that are important for your overall growth as a coach. Specifically:

1. demonstration of coaching
2. getting deeper into ICF Competencies
3. a coaching tool you can utilize
4. a scientific approach or an assessment

8. We address the colloquial understanding of the word “holistic”

Yes, our training — even though it offers much more than that — does include the use of meditation in coaching, mind-body wellness approaches, developing and trusting your intuition, visualization, and imagery techniques. As you would expect from the name Goal Imagery®, we utilize future thinking, NLP, visualization, imagination, and our own goal-oriented imagery techniques to enable our clients and students in experiencing their desired future. It empowers them to tweak it until it’s exactly what they would like it to be, create effective strategies, and foresee what they need to address to obtain it.

9. We embrace the whole world

From the moment this school was established, we offered our trainings online — so that everyone could join no matter where they were.  We have an incredibly talented worldwide community of coaches who are joined by their passion for coaching and the desire to support one another. We are also very mindful of not only making our education the best there is but also to have affordable options.
